Dr. Michelle Tang received her BSc, DDS and MSc in Dental Anaesthesia degrees at the University of Toronto. She practices as a dentist anaesthesiologist in an out-patient anaesthesia dental clinic in Oakville. Also, she provides anaesthesia services to Mississauga and Brampton pediatric dental clinics and a Burlington dental anaesthesia clinic. Apart from being a dentist anaesthesiologist, Dr. Tang was a part-time Assistant Professor in the Discipline of Dental Anaesthesia and helped establish the Paediatric Anaesthesia Clinic at the Faculty of Dentistry. Currently, she still lectures and teaches for both University of Toronto and Western University. In addition to her commitment to education, Dr. Tang has served a numerous number of roles on several Boards and Societies, including the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and the American Society of Dental Anesthesia. Currently, she is the Treasurer of the Canadian Academy of Dental Anaesthesia. Recently, Dr. Tang took on the role as an Assistant Chief Examiner for the National Dental Examination Board.

Dr. Samuel Toong has a master’s degree in Pharmacology from the University of Toronto and completed his dental training at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed his training in two-drug IV sedation at a GPR program in York Hospital, Pennsylvania. After finishing his GPR program, Dr. Toong returned to practice in rural Ontario. Like many dentists trained in two-drug sedation practicing in Ontario, he was limited to single drug IV sedation. Seeing the need for deeper levels of anaesthesia he returned to complete his master’s degree in Dental Anaesthesiology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Toong offers a wealth of knowledge and experience in providing all levels of sedation in the dental setting. He currently runs a private anaesthesia practice in Burlington, Ontario and also works part-time as a Facility Inspector for the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario.

Course description :

Sedation offers patients a relief from their anxieties at the dental office. For dentists, being able to provide sedation can lead to better case acceptance and better care for their patients. Yet, the sedation component of the appointment often takes a secondary role when a dentist provides the sedation and completes the dental treatment simultaneously. This can often lead to complications and sub-optimal treatment. The topics discussed will help dentists and their staff understand the importance of their role in preparing and caring for a patient under sedation. These lectures include a review of proper medical history taking and the identification of potential issues that may arise with minimal and moderate sedation. We will also look to dispel common misconceptions about sedation and provide tips and tricks for a successful sedation practice.

Specific topics include :
  • Review of four essential systems – cardiac, respiratory, hepatic and renal
  • Review of the antibiotic prophylaxis guidelines
  • Review of airway assessment for sedation patients
  • Special considerations for pediatric, pregnant and elderly patients
  • Choosing the perfect sedation patient for your practice
  • Monitoring the ‘old school’ way
  • Minimal and moderate sedation – what’s the difference?
  • When’s the party starting doc? When sedation doesn’t seem to work
  • What do I do now? Identifying and getting out of trouble with sedation
